[By the way, the word Abrolhos is Portuguese, not Dutch] TRANSCRIPT CHRIS TAYLOR: Tourism’s a funny business. We tell the world to chuck a shrimp on the barbie and they can’t get enough of us. But when we ask, ‘where the bloody hell are you’, suddenly they all get offended by the use of the great Australian adjective. Funnily enough, the very first tourists who actually arrived in Australia, landed here 150 years before James Cook did and I’m guessing their first words were probably, where the bloody hell are we? The National Treasure they left behind is on West Wallabi Islands, just off Geraldton in Western Australia. This ruin of a primitive fort which is on the National Heritage List is the oldest structure ever built by Europeans in Australia. How it came to be here on this barren, ...

Much of the west coast of Australia was discovered by accident, when Dutch treasure galleons ploughed into its fringing coral reefs and left chests of gold and silver on the coral floor. Ben dives on two of these treasure ships, silver guilders can still be recovered from under the sand. Two Dutch treasure ships are yet to be found. Their wealth is enormous. Millions of dollars worth of gold and silver coins in a dozen chests lie somewhere along the West Australian Coast. A lucky diver will one day stumble upon these riches. Australia’s first shipwreck was English, the Tryal, lost in 1622 long before Cook sailed our shores. She carried 500 golden royals and gold spangles as a gift for the King of Siam. Ben dives this ancient wreck but the treasuries not yet found. Ben discovered hundreds of shipwrecks, including the famous Pandora of Bounty fame, but there are thousands more still hidden in a watery grave. There are legends of Spanish galleons, invariably not true, but some of these lost ships are known treasure ships and Ben searches for them. The ‘Sun’ went down in 1826 with 40,000 silver dollars in the eastern Torres Strait. Ben finds this ship, but not the mother lode, except for a few scattered coins. He believes the coins were found by one of Frank Jardines pearling luggers, and became known as the famous Jardine Treasure. The ‘Ann’ was lost on Cockburn Reef in the northern end of the Great Barrier Reef, Her rich cargo of coins were lost. Ben locates this wreck and searches for it’s treasure. Australia’s greatest lost treasure is the ship Madagasca. She left Melbourne for London in 1853 with 68,390 ounces of gold, and was never heard of again. That treasure is worth $27 million today. Not all Australia’s lost treasures lie under the sea. It’s believed the Japanese pirate Yamada Nagamasa buried his enormous loot on Magnetic Island. It’s rumoured to be worth $100 million, and has never been found. Ben finds a strange symbol carved in a prominent rock on Magnetic Island, opposite the only bay a ship could safely anchor in. Is this symbol the proverbial 'X' marks the spot! Australia’s great gold rush of the 19th century added greatly to the list of lost treasures on land and in the sea. Queensland’s great cyclone of 1899 destroyed some 70 pearling ships and drowned 300 sailors. Bathurst Bay is littered with these wrecks, now buried in the sand for more than a hundred years, with diving helmets and pearls strewn over the sea floor. So what became of all the gold and silver that fate, so cruelly in many instances, snatched from its rightful owners? Some was recovered, some lost forever, but much still remains for the intrepid treasure hunter who is prepared to research the facts, sift through the legends, and give it a try. Ben’s film will take us around Australia to where these hidden treasures should lie.

This video follows on from the previous one. We tell the story of the excavations at the site! From the video: The newspaper articles say that about 120 years ago, Kerosene Jack was seen walking around, peering at the ground in various beaches around queenscliff. He was an amiable kind of guy, but became strangely reticent when questioned about any treasure. Nevertheless it is he who may have formed most of the legend of hte treausre. A pirates map had been tatooed on his arm. One article states that he lived in a shack made up of kerosene cans. Another says his name was Jack Karissimo. Some say his name was actually Stringaree Jack. He seems to have died decades before the big treasure-hunting syndicates were able to tackle the site, as an old man. Every newspaper article seems to tell a different tale. It seems people began looking for the treasure in response to Kerosene Jack's drunken tales in the 1920s. One article from the 20s, claimed the council's main interest in the matter was simply filling in holes in the beach which had been dug. Syndicates seem to have been digging since about 1900. A well-funded syndicate in 1935 located one likely location using dowsing rods. They began digging in earnest. In 1937 they abandoned their almost fifty foot shaft as it was filling with water. By 1938, they had resumed their shaft, with a pump which could displace 50,000 gallons per hour. At one time they halted their excavation until they could bring in 'powerful submarine lights'. They also brought in huge steel cylinders to shore up the shaft they had dug, spending thousands of pounds on their enterprise. Alternately, the articles seem to be suggesting these steel cylinders were a kind of bathysphere, for men to work in. By now this syndicate had sunk various timbered shafts around a central hole, with a mining engineer in charge, with boring equipment. Labourers and divers were even hired but in the end, around the beginning of the war, it is said that their reward was only sand. In one newspaper article from 1938, the journalist says he was shown some recovered treasure in Queenscliff, by one hunter. It consisted of pistols and swords supposedly once belonging to Ben Bonito. The hunter claimed that he was refused permission to dig, as he did not specify the location, and they feared he would dig up the main street of Queens-cliff. At 58 feet, the team found an underwater room, but nothing came of it. In the 1950s a new and even larger syndicate took over. They used a dowser who employed two sharp metal rods, to sense electromagnetic energies of the gold. When he walked over the site, the recoil was so hard that the rods snapped back and nearly cut his thumbs off. This was convincing enough for the syndicate to begin digging in earnest. The syndicate was fuelled by the discovery of a seventeenth century Spanish coin near the cliffs. This however may have just been a plant. It was said to have been backed by 'wealthy western grazers'. A pump which could displace 350,000 gallons per hour was brought in, and a huge mechanical scoop. Allegedly, on one weekend, such was the newspaper frenzy that seven thousand holiday-goers from Melbourne arrived to shake their hands and wish them luck. One article by a journalist claims that he was told by a publican that the syndicate members were in his bar, 'celebrating' one night and passing a round object between themselves. Since it was run by an open-cut mining engineer, By 1955, the hole was being described in newspapers as a 'crater', sixty feet deep, with only an old 1880s Enfield rifle recovered. One story says that students of the nearby school are scared that gelignite blasting would shatter their windows, and debris was falling on students. Another story says the windows did shatter and the students were cut by flying glass. The syndicate apologised and promised no more blasting, but it was too late. The government swiftly stepped in and despite howls of protest, their licence was revoked, and the team banished from the site forever, along with all other excavations. Over time people would forget that the possible treasure even existed... I decided to visit with some friends and have a look, we went to the blasting site and later some cliff caves on the other side of the peninsula. Check this out! Cocos island, in the Indian Ocean, is infamous for its caves, jungles, and supposed buried treasure. The main man responsible for shaping this legend was a A man called William Thompson, captain of the Mary Dear. The origin of the treasure he buried, is Lima, Peru. In 1820, authorities had been close to losing control of the city, in events related to the Peruvian War of Independence, The authorities decided to move their entrie treaure to mexico for safe keeping. The treasure comprised unbelievable amounts of wealth, thousands of pieces of eight, thousands of gemstones inlaid into golden objects, 4000 dubloons, 5000 mexican crowns. Included was a remarkable seven foot Virgin of gold weighing 780 pounds, on which were 1684 jewels. Three of those were four-inch emeralds on the pectoral and six are six-inch topazes on the crown. There were also seven crosses covered in diamonds. The value today would be incalculable Thompson deicded that he would be a fool to part with this incredible treasure. It was of course accompanied by Spanish marines, as well as priests. Thompson massacred them all. He then sailed to Coccos island and buried most of the loot. The Spanish however were on his tail. He and his ship the Mary Dear were boarded, by the frigate 'Espigle', and the pirate crew met with a grisly death on the yardarm. About to be executed, Thompson and the first mate cut a deal. They would lead the Spaniards to the treasure in exchange for their lives. Upon reaching Coccos Island, He led the Spaniards down a long and false path, deep into the jungle. He then bolted, disappearing forever. It's unknown what happened to the first mate. Some treasure hunters, think that Thompson made it back to Newfoundland with the help of a whaling ship. He never appears again, bu appears to have a successor, with a strange name, Benito Bonito, of the Bloody Sword. The name is convoluted, lengthy, and it must have been something like Bloody-Sword Ben for short. This pirate also liked to bury American treasure at Coccos island which he had raided in the Americas. Some say that it was really Thompson went by the name Ben Bonito. At any rate Benito had a career of his own. According to legend, in 1821, he entered Port Phillip Bay. There was as yet no colonial city in Victoria. The remote location and almost-unknown bay afforded suitable protection to hide the loot of lima. His adopted name was "Bloody Sword" Bonito, who despite the romantic name was a minor pirate, not in the category of Blackbeard. The problem with Bonito is he is more a legend than anything and historians have had a hard time verifying details about him. The story of Queenscliff, a peninsula on the end of Bellarine peninsula, Victoria, comes from Mary, a girl he had picked up in Panama. She claims that Bloody Swords' actual name was Graham Bennett, who had captained the HMS Devonshire. He had been given the task of surveying the coast between Cape Horn and Panama. Sensing his remoteness, and not fearing the decaying navy of the declining Spanish Empire, the temptation to raid the Spanish main, had become too great. He announced his plans to the crew. he promised that those who would not join him in his new career would be safely put assure. He double crossed these men. During a visit to Cocoos island, which may have been to either deposit or look for treasure, he took the disagreeable portion of his crew by surprise, massacring them on shore. It is this location which links Bonito to the treasure of Lima. Another version of the tale says that Thompson, who commandeered the treasure, is none of that Ben Bonito himself! They are one and the same! After this, he raided a squadron of the Treasure Fleet, attacking three Spanish Man-o-wars, even capturing one vessel, and loading up his treasure on this ship, as the Devonshire was beyond repair. He then sailed to Cocos island, burying his loot at the end of a tunnel, which was 35 feet long. A heavily armed pirate hunting ship was dispatched, and was soon hard on the heals of Bennet's ship. Bonito defeated this after a hard battle. His own ship was heavily damaged, and he was cornered by another ship, in Beuna Ventura bay, and executed. In another story this happened at Coccos Island. In Mary's tale, this happened at Queenscliff, where he was sighted just after exiting the heads of the bay, by a British warship. There are so many versions, because our reconstruction of events is based around tales whispered by drunken sailors, told in long-forgotten taverns now buried beneath modern cities. How it came to be here on this barren, remote island is an incredible tale of mutiny and murder. In 1629 the Dutch merchant ship, ‘Batavia’ was traveling the spice route to modern day Jakarta when she hit a reef and sank just off Beacon Island. Beacon is one of about 120 islands in the Houtman Abrolhos group. Now Abrolhos is Dutch for ‘keep your eyes open’ which clearly somebody wasn’t doing. Of the 332 people on board the Batavia, 280 made it to land, and one of them was a nasty piece of work. Under merchant Jeronimus Cornelisz was an apothacary by trade, a bankrupt by law and a heretic by thought. Jeronimus thought everything he did was inspired by God, so he was incapable of sin, which was pretty handy. When his plans for mutiny and steal the ship’s valuable cargo is literally scuttled, God gave him more inspiration. The ship’s captain, Francisco Palsaert had already decided to sail their longboat 900 kilometres north to Batavia to fetch help. He and about 40 others set off that way while another group of men led by a marine called Wiebbe Hayes came here to West Wallabi in search of water. They stayed and built this – Australia’s first no star accommodation. Back on Beacon, Cornelisz and his cronies planned to hijack any rescue ship which turned up. The remaining men, women and children weren’t part of that plan, so the mutineers merrily slaughtered them. Hayes’s blokes on West Wallabi got wind of this bloody rampage. The enemy camps fought two vicious battles here. Final score? West Wallabies 2, Mutineers nil. What’s more the victors got to Francisco Pelsaert first when he returned a month or so later. Pelseart tortured Cornelisz and the other mutineers, made them sign confessions, then chopped off their hands and hanged them. 332 people started the voyage, only 116 reached their final destination. But the Batavia story has a 20th century postscript. The wreck was discovered in 1963 and ten years later part of the hull was raised and put on display here in the Western Australian Maritime Museum. Doctor Jeremy Green is the Museum’s head of Maritime Archeology. Jeremy there’s obviously a lot of shipwrecks in Australia, what makes the Batavia so unique? DR JEREMY GREEN: Batavia was a Dutch East India Company shipwreck and the Company had thousands of ships in the 17th and 18th century trading between Europe and Asia. This is the only one that has been archeologically excavated, raised, conserved, and put on display. CHRIS TAYLOR: And when it was first discovered it must have been very attractive for looters all hopeful of finding treasure and so forth. DR JEREMY GREEN: There was a lot of looting in the very early days and a lot of divers and general public became really concerned about this issue. And the government enacted the First Underwater Heritage Legislation anywhere in the world since 1963 so it’s really – CHRIS TAYLOR: First in the world? DR JEREMY GREEN: Yeah. CHRIS TAYLOR: Despite their bloodthirsty antics, not all the mutineers were executed. Pelsaert marooned two of them on the mainland. They were told to ‘Abrolhos’ - keep their eyes open for a vessel in two years time. Australia’s first two European residents were never heard of again. The wreck of the Batavia convinced the Dutch East Indies Company to make accurate charts of this new coastline. Australia was finally on the western world’s map. This fort is our first structure made by Europeans and that makes it a National Treasure.

What an Amazing Adventure out on the river! I found lots of awesome things with my AT Pro, while searching for my friend's lost wedding ring. After 10 hours of Metal Detecting I recovered many rings, one is a 14K Gold wedding band, but it is not the one I was looking for. Joe's ring is still somewhere in the river, next time we may find it. My best finds from this trip are the Iphone 6 (Which I had returned to the owner), The Rings, Waterproof Lumix Camera and the nice shades. Link to the metal detector I use: https://www.battleground-detectors.com/shop/garrett-metal-detectors/94-garrett-at-pro-pro-pointer-at.html This video was filmed with my Olympus camera. Here's the link http://amzn.to/2ki8HIG , these camera are rugged! I will have more videos of detecting in the river coming soon! Thank you for watching and God Bless! "On the last day of the feast, the great day, Jesus stood up and cried out, " If anyone thrists, let him come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, 'Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.' " - John 7:37-38 "Take my instruction instead of silver, and knowledge rather than choice gold, for wisdom is better than jewels, and all that you may desire cannot compare with her." - Proverbs 8:10-11 Isaiah 40:8
